Hardwood Floor Repair

If you've noticed that your hardwood floor has some spots that need repairing do not worry. You do not have to replace the entire hardwood floor if a board or two need to be replaced. In fact, you don't even have to hire anybody to do the job for you. Replacing a couple of boards or making minor repairs is something you can do yourself and save your money for something else. The following will help you to get started on repairing your hardwood floor.

Preparing For Repair

When all of the nails are cleared of the board, you will use a carpenter's square to make a perpendicular line on the board that is going to be replaced. However, if you have to remove the entire board, you can skip this step completely. Once the line is made, drill holes into the lines using a ? inch spade bit. Then, using a wood chisel, you can split the board into two pieces and pry the board out.

Now that the board is removed, you'll want to remove any nails that may be in the way of a new board. You'll also want to use a sharp wood chisel to clean up the ends of the board if you removed only a small section of it. This will make fitting the new board in a lot easier.

Repairing

Measure the old board and cut the new board to this length. If properly cut, the board should fit in place smoothly. To tap it in place, place a piece of scrap wood on top so you do not damage the new board. If it doesn't quite fit, re-cut the new board.

Once you've firmly placed the new board, you'll want to secure it in place with 2 inch long nails. The last and final step is to try to match the finish to the old flooring. If it can not be done, you may want to refinish the whole floor.
